Note: College students should begin their summer job search in January.  Below is the time schedule you should follow to land that high-paying internship related to your career major.  Corporations want to hire students whose college majors compliment their products and services.  Corporations do not hire college students who are undecided about their college major or students who only want high-paying jobs.  Corporations look at summer internships as an investment in their future staff.

STEP ONE January:
bulletPrepare your resume and cover letter.
bulletReview Newsday's "Industry Sector Lists" to focus on 20 corporations related to your college major.
bulletSend your cover letter and resume to the 20 corporations.  Introduce yourself and inquire about internships.  Let them know you will contact them in March when you return home for spring break.
STEP TWO Approximately March:  One week before your return home:
bulletSend second intro letter and resume informing the company you will contact them by phone when you return home.
STEP THREE One week later:
bulletContact all 20 companies the first (business) day you are home.
bulletSet up exploratory interviews for internships.
bulletAsk the corporation when they will be making staffing decisions.
STEP FOUR After each interview:
bulletSend a thank you letter to the corporation.
bulletContact the corporation by phone from college, if you need to follow-up.

If you have completed all of the above steps, you should have received several internship offers by April 15th.

If you did not, quickly repeat the above steps with another 20 corporations.
