Cold
canvassing is the act of searching for a job by going door-to-door and
presenting yourself to the employer. The employer may not have an
immediate opening. You are searching for a "future"
opening.
Create a "Hire
Me Now" card and use it as a business card.
Present it to the employer if he/she does not have a job
application for you to complete. Many small stores do not have a formal application.
·
Enter the store or office alone on a Monday—Thursday
afternoon before 5 p.m.
·
Do not bring your friend or parent.
·
Bring your working card (blue or green), a pen and your
social security number.
·
Upon entering the store or office, ask to speak to the person
in charge of hiring about FUTURE employment.
Do not use the phrases, “Are you hiring?”
“Do you have any jobs?”
·
Introduce yourself: “Hi,
I am Christopher Hiremenow, a student at Smithtown High School.
I am interested in working for your store as a sales or stock
person. May I fill out an
application for future employment?”
·
May I leave my “Hire Me Now” card with you in case you do
have an opening you can contact me.
·
Thank the person for his time.
