Your child's first job can be a rewarding
experience which will lead to future career success.
Discuss with your child your feelings
concerning where he/she should begin a career. Specifically
discuss:
-
How will your child travel to
and from work each day?
-
What will you do if your child's form
of transportation is not available?
-
How many hours a week would you want
your child to work?
-
How will your child balance academic,
personal, and family responsibilities while he/she is working.
|
|
Pre-employment
Skills

|
Your child will be learning
the essential basics on how to get a job. These are invaluable
techniques that he/she will use for a lifetime. Please discuss
with your child:
-
Your first job and how
you obtained it.
-
The importance of
dressing for an interview.
-
The importance of going
to an interview alone without the support of a friend or adult
present.
-
The importance of having
a resume to "sell" yourself during an interview.
-
Which adults can your
child use for references.
Your child's excitement
about his/her first paycheck is an event to remember. However,
your child will have many questions about all those deductions from
gross pay. Please discuss with your child:
-
The purpose of payroll
deductions.
-
The habit of saving some
portion of the net pay for future needs.

Success
Skills for Students:
|
Once your child secures employment,
he/she will need to master the skills for succeeding in the job.
Our second ten-week unit assists your child in developing the skills,
attitudes and knowledge of career success.
The habits and attitudes we adopt early
in our lives do not change when we enter the workplace. A child
who does not listen well at home will most likely have the same problem
in school and at the work site.
Now is the time to become aware of our
strengths and weaknesses.
Discuss with your child the importance
of:
 |
Arriving to work on time.
|
 |
Calling the employer if he/she needs
to be absent from work.
|
 |
What are acceptable reasons for being
absent from work?
|
 |
Being a team player.
|
 |
Demonstrating initiative at the job
site.
|
 |
Reporting to you, the instructor and
the employer, any form of sexual harassment at the workplace.
|
 |
Demonstrating the desirable traits of
honesty, loyalty and dependability.
