Exploring LI Corporations

The secret to finding any job is to diligently create and follow a strategy.

A successful strategy to find the job you want is the following:

#1  Preparation:

Create a dynamic resume that sells your assets to an employer.

#2  Research:

Identify the "players in the career league" you wish to find employment.  For example, if you wish to find a job in the accounting industry, you need to identify the local accounting firms, the regional (LI) firms and the national firms.

To do this you need to:

bulletRead industry profiles from such companies at Wetfeet.com.
bulletSeek out professional associations which represent the industry or career you want.
bulletResearch the membership directories of local business associations such as the Long Island Association, Hauppauge Industrial Association, LISTNet, LIFT.
bulletIdentify the players in the industry through the lists published by Newsday’s Sector lists , Yellowbook.com and Phone Select software.
bulletAlumni:
bulletContact the Alumni Center from your college or high school to make networking contacts.

#3  Action:

After completing the above it is now time for you take action in several ways.

bulletEmail your resume and a short cover letter directly to an individual.
bulletFax your resume along with a fax cover lever directly to an individual.
bulletMail a cover letter and your resume directly to an individual.
bulletCall an individual at a corporation directly.

Your goal is to contact at least 7 corporations/associations in one week.

bulletFollow up each contact at the end of the week by phone or email.
bulletContinue to make 7 contacts each week for 4 weeks.
bulletThat will give you 28 networking contacts.

Remember:  Don't wait for a corporation to announce a job opening!  Be proactive.  Uncover the hidden job market by completing the above steps.  Become "industry smart."

PAYING YOUR DUES:

In many career fields individuals may have to work in a non-paid status for a period of time.  This is called "paying your dues."  The sooner you "pay your dues" in the industry the better it will be for your career path.

It is a great deal easier to pay your dues under the age of 21.  You have fewer expenses and you are normally supported by your parents.  A non-paid internship for 15 - 20 hours a week can be financially supported by a job in the evening or weekends.

Take advantage of this time and make personal sacrifices now in order to get your foot in the door later!
